Bishop Dwight A. Nixon has served the Suffolk community for 39 years as the pastor of St. Mary’s Church of God in Christ. He is married to Evangelist Brenda Nixon and they have two sons and a daughter-in-law, Quincy Nixon, Elder Owen, and Eurnicka Nixon. They have 4 granddaughters, Sharonda, Sharanda, Shalise, and Abigail. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Bishop Nixon demonstrated leadership abilities and a strong desire for excellence early in life. Bishop Nixon became the Tidewater Boxing Association Lightweight champion in 1975. The training and discipline gained through this boxing experience, followed by his call to a ministry of serving people, established the framework for Pastor Nixon’s drive to work in the Kingdom of God with all of his heart, mind, body, and soul to help build strong families and communities.
Bishop Nixon was called into the ministry in the Church of God in Christ under the hand of his pastor, the late Elder Cornelius Purkett. He was ordained as pastor of St. Mary’s in 1986 by the Late Bishop Levi Willis Sr.
Under Bishop Nixon’s leadership, the membership supported the church renovation in 1991. As the church continues to grow, today Pastor Nixon has a vision to erect a Christian School and Youth Center behind the church to serve the community.
Bishop Nixon has served in several areas of ministry in the New Frontier Church of God in Christ. He is currently an Administrative Assistant to Bishop Jonathan G. Willis over the Southern Region, where he serves on the Executive Board of the New Frontier Church of God in Christ.
To develop his educational growth, Bishop Nixon earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies and a Masters of Divinity degree from Norfolk Seminary and College, Norfolk, VA. He also received his Doctorate in Ministry from Living Waters Biblical Institute.
Bishop Nixon has a strong determination to uplift and build the community. He is committed to increasing economic success, supporting the education of our youth, promoting morale, and maintaining safety for all citizens in the city of Suffolk and people around the world. As a leader in the community, Bishop Nixon has served on numerous boards and organizations. He has served three terms on the City of Suffolk’s Economic Development Authority (EDA). He served as the chaplain for Local 1248 International Longshoreman Association for several years
With his experience, visionary leadership and strong commitment to his family, community and city, Bishop Nixon is committed to continue working in the Kingdom of God with all his heart mind body and soul. According to the scripture, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me is the premise in which he operates. To God be the Glory for the things He has done!
